Graphitene becomes an associated member of the Graphene Flagship

London, Sepember 1, 2016: – Three years into the 10-year voyage of the EC’s €1bn Graphene FET Flagship, Graphitene has joined as associated member the Graphene Flagship Consortium, a premiere research initiative dedicated to taking graphene and related materials from laboratory to factory floor.

Graphitene’s application to join the Graphene Flagship as an associated member was approved by the Flagship Management Panel. Working in collaboration with other leading organisations across Europe, Graphitene will be seeking to develop exploitable innovations in the structural materials and energy storage sectors.

The director of the Graphene Flagship, Professor Jari Kinaret comments “Associated Membership is an important means for our European Commission-funded project to engage additional organisations that work towards the goals of the Flagship. In particular, associates broaden the industrial base of the Flagship, and we are looking forward to working together with Graphitene to create new technologies based on graphene and related materials”.

The Graphene Flagship’s Science and Technology Officer and Chair of the Management Panel, Professor Andrea Ferrari adds “The growing number of companies applying to become associate members of the Graphene Flagship shows that we are steadily progressing along our roadmap taking graphene and related materials from lab to factory floor. This gives us confidence when it comes to our ultimate goal of providing economic and social benefits through exploiting the unique properties of layered materials. The areas of interest for Graphitene, such as the construction industry, are promising sector for the mass application of graphene”

Graphitene’s CEO, Gaute Juliussen also commented “This is a superb programme and one we’re delighted to be a part of. The Flagship recognised the leadership position Graphitene has taken in developing and commercializing graphene-based admixtures for concretes and composites, and for scaled manufacturing. Working with partners developing graphene and related materials, we see possibilities for complementary and completely new products.”

About Graphitene

Graphitene is a 2nd generation nanomaterials company engaged in research, development, and sale of a proprietary graphene admixture, graphitene™. It is also a leading innovator in the manufacture and application of natural graphite and functionalized graphene derivatives focused specifically on large volume markets; chiefly concretes, composites, protective coatings, oil spill adsorbents and energy storage.

Through a proprietary, scalable, and low carbon footprint process Graphitene produces single or few layer graphene and nano-scaled graphite, trademarked as NanoCarbon Platelets™, and as a concentrate compound, Graphitene™.

Graphitene is a complete solutions company that works directly with end-users, and has developed a production facility designed for easy scale-up of production to hundreds of tons per year. The product quality has been independently characterized and validated by major corporations, academic institutions and industrial partners.

Graphene Flagship

The Graphene Flagship is a Future and Emerging Technology (FET) Flagship by the European Commission. With a budget of €1 billion, the Graphene Flagship represent a new form of joint, coordinated research on an unprecedented scale, forming Europe’s biggest ever research initiative.

Through a combined academic-industrial consortium, the research effort covers the entire value chain, from materials production to components and system integration, and targets a number of specific goals that exploit the unique properties of graphene.

The core consortium consists of over 150 academic and industrial research groups in 23 countries. In addition, the project has a growing number of associated members that will be incorporated in the scientific and technological work packages from the Horizon 2020 phase (1 April 2016 – 31 March 2018).
